Gender and Sexuality Resources for Older People

What is meant by gender, sexuality and bodies?

Sexual orientation, gender identity or intersex status have strongly contested terminology. There appears to be no clear consensus on what is appropriate terminology in this area, but inclusive language that respects individuality is paramount.

In Australia, the acronym LGBTI is used to reflect the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex communities. Gender identity is the personal experience of one’s gender, one’s innermost concept of self as male or female or both or neither. The intersex community is often considered separately due to the biological nature of sex rather than gender. This information complements the Australian Government Department of Health’s Actions to Support LGBTI Elders: a Guide for Aged Care Providers.

These resources cover gender and sexuality with regards to older people, to assist you in promoting healthy LGBTI ageing in both aged care and home care contexts.
